Vol. 564 No. 1

Written Answers - EU Council Meetings.

Aengus Ó Snodaigh

Question:

176 Aengus Ó Snodaigh asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he has made any investigations as to whether unauthorised listening devices were illegally installed in offices used by the Irish delegates to EU Council meetings and UN Security Council meetings, as happened to other delegations; if so, the results of those investigations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8777/03]

Responsibility for security in EU Council buildings is a matter for the Council secretariat. As reported in some newspapers, during normal inspection work carried out recently by the security services of the Council secretariat, some suspect electronic devices were discovered in the EU Council building in Brussels. These devices were directed at various locations in the building, including some delegation rooms. The security services have assured us that the Irish delegation room was not affected. The devices in question have been disconnected and the Council secretariat is carrying out investigations into their source. With regard to Irish delegates attending the UN Security Council during our two year term on that body, national delegation rooms are not provided at UN headquarters.
