Vol. 564 No. 1

Written Answers - Schools Building Projects.

Dinny McGinley

Question:

194 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for Education and Science the start date for the new building programme for the secondary school at Moville, County Donegal. [8869/03]

The 2003 capital programme has been published and full details on individual projects are available on my Department's website at www.education.ie. The project at Moville is at an early stage of architectural planning, namely, the pre-planning permission stage.

Having regard to the level of financial commitments to be met from projects already in con struction, the Department does not envisage that it will be in a position during this year to allow architectural planning for further large-scale projects to progress beyond their current stage. The timing of when the project at Moville can proceed to construction will depend on the financial allocation for 2004 and subsequent years and the priority rating assigned to competing projects.

Question:

196 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for Education and Science the start date for St. Mura's school, Buncrana, County Donegal. [8871/03]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 195 and 196 together.

The 2003 school building programme has now been published and full details on individual projects are available on my Department's website at www.education.ie. On the basis of the budgetary allocation it was not possible to include any further projects in 2003. The budgetary allocation for 2004 and subsequent years will determine the rate of progress on projects that could not be included in this year's programme.

Seán Haughey

Question:

197 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Education and Science if approval was given by his Department between April 2001 and May 2002, to Scoil Mhuire, Marino, Dublin 9, for major works including a new staff room, external security measures and controlled admission to school buildings; if this is still the case; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8872/03]

In the meantime, individual schools should use their devolved grant to deal with any urgent health and safety works.

Bernard Allen

Question:

198 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Education and Science the situation regarding St. Catherine's national school, Bishopstown Avenue West, Cork; if he will allow its project to go to tender in view of the fact that there are overcrowded classrooms, asbestos floor tiles, cracks in walls and playground surfaces, poor ventilation, no wet area or toilets in the classrooms, the original wiring is still in place, and especially in view of the fact that the school was built in 1959 and has not been refurbished since; and if he will make a decision on the school in view of the health and safety issues involved. [8896/03]

Where asbestos requiring removal is detected, either as a result of a survey conducted by the Office of Public Works or otherwise, arrangements are made to undertake the work in accordance with the relevant health and safety legislation by my Department and the Office of Public Works.
