96 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the total funds provided for regional and county roads for each of the past ten years on a county basis; if he has satisfied himself that the funding provided for 2003 will retain the progress that has been made over the past seven years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The following tabular statement sets out the information requested.

I have allocated €439.75 million to local authorities for non-national roads in 2003. This is double the 1997 provision and an increase of almost 2% on the 2002 State grant payment of €431.7 million – the highest ever State grant provision for non-national roads. I am satisfied that this significant funding, supplemented by local auth orities' own resources, will provide adequately for the special and ongoing needs of all local authorities in 2003 and will continue the excellent progress made since 1997 in improving the network. The restoration programme provision to county councils in 2003 will enable all county councils to carry out all of the 2003 schemes in their multi-annual restoration programmes for 2002-2005 and enable all county councils to also carry out one or more of their 2004 schemes.
