Vol. 564 No. 1

Written Answers - Tax Reliefs.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

170 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Finance the reason for the delay in sanctioning tax relief on interest for a person (details supplied) in County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8728/03]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that in April 2002 the taxpayer sent certificates of interest paid on a credit union loan to the inspec tor of taxes. The certificates related to the 1998-99, 1999-00 and 2000-01 tax years. There was no covering letter with the certificates nor was there any indication of the purpose for which the loan was taken out. The inspector wrote to the taxpayer on 9 April 2002 requesting him to provide information about the purpose of the credit union loan and to complete a return of income for 2000-01. To date the inspector has not received a reply and, in the absence of the requested information, the inspector is not in a position to determine whether tax relief is due.
