Vol. 564 No. 5

Written Answers - Legal Costs.

Michael Noonan

Question:

46 Mr. Noonan asked the Minister for Finance his views on the cost of legal representation at the Tribunals; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9677/03]

Paul McGrath

Question:

64 Mr. P. McGrath asked the Minister for Finance his views on whether the cost of legal representation at tribunals is excessive; and his proposals to reduce those costs. [9654/03]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 46 and 64 together.

As I have stated on several occasions recently, I am increasingly concerned at the ongoing and cumulative costs of tribunals of inquiry and in particular at the legal costs falling on the taxpayer from these. As I have also recently indicated, I am exploring possible methods of containing these costs with the Attorney General. In this context, the consultation paper on public inquiries, published last week by the Law Reform Commission, will be carefully considered. I am also strongly supportive of the proposals of the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform for the establishment of committees of investigation which are expected to provide savings, compared to existing arrangements.
