Vol. 565 No. 4

Written Answers. - Health Funding.

Liz McManus

Question:

144 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Health and Children the percentage of GDP which was spent on health in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11290/03]

The most recent information from the OECD, published in 2002, identifies Ireland's spend on health as a percentage of GDP at 6.8% in 1999 and 6.7% in 2000, of which public expenditure accounted for 5.2% and 5.1% respectively.

It is estimated by my Department that Ireland's spend on health as a percentage of GDP was 7.9% in 2001 and 8% in 2002, of which public expenditure accounted for 6.3% and 6.6% respectively.
