Vol. 565 No. 4

Written Answers. - National Stadium.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

33 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism if he will give an up to date assessment of the national stadium project or alternatives; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11113/03]

In September 2002 the Government decided that it would not be appropriate in the present budgetary environment to provide Exchequer funding for a national stadium and instead to explore if potential exists to procure a stadium with private sector involvement. Expressions of interest were sought from private sector investors for the development of a privately-financed stadium at Abbotstown. Some 23 submissions were received and have been evaluated. The evaluation of the various proposals received was carried out by my Department with the assistance of experts from Office of Public Works, the Department of Finance, National Treasury Management Agency, NTMA, and CSID Limited.

Before bringing the matter to Government for final decision, I asked the IRFU and FAI, who have an urgent need for enhanced stadium facilities, to report to me by mid-April setting out their preferred options for stadium development.

On receipt of this report I will examine its contents following which I will report to Government, taking cognisance of the proposals of the sports bodies and the evaluation of the expressions of interest received. My report will also deal with issues of stadium location, size and cost and will take into account the current budgetary situation.
