Vol. 566 No. 1

Written Answers. - Departmental Staff.

David Stanton

Question:

269 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the policy of his Department with regard to the employment of persons with disabilities; the actions that have been taken to encourage, enable and assist people with disabilities to gain employment in his Department and in bodies under the aegis of his Department; the current situation with regard to persons with disabilities employed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12148/03]

The Department of Foreign Affairs has a commitment in its human resources strategy statement 2002-04 to participate in the centrally-led programme of positive action in terms of employment of persons with disabilities. In particular, my Department has sought to ensure that it meets the recommended employment target of 3% for people with disabilities. This year that target has been achieved. My Department has also made structural changes to allow people with disabilities easier access to its buildings.

In addition, my Department has a disability liaison officer who supports staff with disabilities and ensures that any specific needs are met.
