Vol. 566 No. 1

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

John McGuinness

Question:

326 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science the programme or replacement he can offer a person (details supplied) in County Kilkenny whose child is deaf, blind and has severe brain damage; if his Department will respond to requests to outline the action he intends to take; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11819/03]

My Department is aware of the case referred to by the Deputy and has established that a place is available for the child in St. Patrick's special school in Kilkenny. The Department has sanctioned a special needs assistant to facilitate the child's enrolment. I understand that the school has arranged for a nurse to be available to provide for the child's medical needs. School transport arrangements are being explored by the school. I understand, however, the child has not yet presented for enrolment in St. Patrick's. The family is advised to contact the school to indicate if they intend availing of the placement.
