Question:

350 Mr. P. McGrath asked the Minister for Education and Science the progress which has been made regarding additional classrooms and improvement works at St. Etchen's national school, Kinnegad, County Westmeath. [12066/03]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 340, 341, 342, 344, 345, 347, 349 and 350 together.

The proposed large scale building projects for national schools at Clonmellon, St. Etchen's, Kinnegad, Dysart, Fore, and Coralstown are listed in section 7 of the 2003 school building programme, which I published on my Department's website, www.education.ie. These proposed projects are at an early stage of architectural planning and have been assigned a "band 2" rating, with the exception of Fore national school which has been assigned a "band 3" rating by my Department in accordance with the published criteria for prioritising large scale projects. The proposed large scale building project for Dalystown national school is also listed in section 7 of the programme and has been assigned a "band 3" rating.

Projects listed in sections 6 and 7 – primary – are not being authorised to progress beyond their current stage of architectural planning for the time being. The question of when projects listed in these sections can progress to tender and construction will depend on the budgetary allocation for 2004 and subsequent years and the priority afforded to each project by reference to the band rating. In view of the scale of the 2003 school building programme as published, and having regard to the level of financial commitments to be met from projects already in construction, my Department will not be in a position to initiate architectural planning on any further large scale building projects in 2003, including the proposed projects at Castledaly national school and Sonna national school. In the meantime, individual schools should use their devolved grant to deal with any urgent health and safety works.

Question:

343 Mr. P. McGrath asked the Minister for Education and Science the progress which has been made in providing additional science laboratories and other facilities at Loreto College, Mullingar; and if he will give a progress report on this application. [12059/03]

The 2003 school building programme has been published and full details in relation to individual projects are available on my Department's website at www.education.ie. The project at Loreto College, Mullingar, is at stage 3 of architectural planning – developed sketch scheme – and is included in section 7 of the 2003 programme. These projects are not being authorised to progress beyond their current stage of architectural planning for the time being. When these projects can progress to tender and construction is dependent on the funding allocation for 2004 and subsequent years.

Question:

346 Mr. P. McGrath asked the Minister for Education and Science the progress which has been made regarding the proposed extension to Our Lady's Bower secondary school, Athlone, County Westmeath. [12062/03]

The 2003 school building programme has been published and full details in relation to individual projects are available on my Department's website at www.education.ie. The extension project at Our Lady's Bower secondary school, Athlone, has not yet commenced architectural planning. Given the level of financial commitments to be met from projects already in construction under the capital programme for 2003, my Department does not envisage that it will be in a position to allow further large scale projects to commence architectural planning this year. The timing of when the project at Our Lady's Bower can progress is dependent on the funding allocation for 2004 and subsequent years.

Question No. 347 answered with Question No. 340.

Question:

348 Mr. P. McGrath asked the Minister for Education and Science if an application has been received from St Finian's college, Mullingar, County Westmeath for funding for redevelopment; the stage this development is at; and the estimated completion date for this project. [12064/03]

I can confirm that my Department is in receipt of an application from St. Finian's college, Mullingar, for funding for re-development works. The application has not yet reached the architectural planning stage. In view of the scale of the capital programme for 2003, as published, and having regard to the level of financial commitments to be met from projects already in construction, my Department does not envisage that it will be in a position during this year to initiate architectural planning on any further large scale projects, including that at St. Finian's college. The timing of when this project can progress is dependent on the funding allocation for 2004 and subsequent years.

The project at the Mercy secondary school in Kilbeggan has not yet commenced architectural planning. In view of the scale of the capital programme for 2003 as published and having regard to the level of financial commitments to be met from projects already in construction, my Department does not envisage that it will be in a position during this year to initiate architectural planning on any further large scale projects including that at the Mercy secondary school in Kilbeggan. The timing of when this project can progress is dependent on the funding allocation for 2004 and subsequent years.
