Vol. 566 No. 1

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Charlie O'Connor

Question:

362 Mr. O'Connor asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the plight of the Holy Rosary national school in Ballycragh, Dublin 24, where there is a serious accommodation crisis which will mean children being turned away next September; if he appreciates that this school is in a rapidly developing area and needs an effective response to its needs; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12168/03]

The 2003 school building programme has now been published and full details in relation to individual projects are available on my Department's website at www.education.ie. On the basis of the budgetary allocation it was not possible to include Holy Rosary national school, Ballycragh, in the 2003 programme as published.

Jackie Healy-Rae

Question:

363 Mr. Healy-Rae asked the Minister for Education and Science the steps he intends to take to ensure the health and safety of the children attending Lauragh national school, Lauragh, Killarney, County Kerry, due to the hazardous condition of the school roof; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12214/03]

Architectural planning is at an advanced stage for a smaller scale building project to provide improved accommodation at Lauragh national school. However, on the basis of the budgetary allocation it was not possible to make provision for this project in the 2003 programme that was published in January. The budgetary allocation for 2004 and subsequent years will determine the rate of progress on projects that could not be included in this year's programme. In the meantime, individual schools should use their devolved grants to deal with any urgent health and safety works.

Question:

364 Mr. Healy-Rae asked the Minister for Education and Science the steps he intends to take to reduce the overcrowded situation in Scoil Cheann Trá, Ceann Trá, Tralee, County Kerry, due to his Department's decision to turn down an application for a Portakabin for resource and remedial teaching which his Department promised it on receiving planning permission, leaving them with an unacceptable overcrowded situation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12215/03]

Section 12 of the school building programme lists the temporary accommodation projects that are approved to progress in 2003. On the basis of the budgetary allocation it was not possible to include any further projects in 2003. The budgetary allocation for 2004 and subsequent years will determine the rate of progress on projects that could not be included in this year's programme. In the meantime, individual schools should use their devolved grants to deal with any urgent health and safety works.
