Vol. 566 No. 1

Written Answers. - Departmental Programmes.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

745 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the amount of money spent by his Department in each of the RAPID areas since the inception of the RAPID programme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12392/03]

The RAPID programme initiative seeks to frontload and prioritise in the most disadvantaged areas in the country, investment already indicated under the national development plan. Forty-five areas are included in the programme. Strand I of RAPID relates to 25 urban areas and strand II to 20 provincial towns. Apart from expenditure on projects, my Department supports the RAPID programme in a number of ways, including the funding of local co-ordinators for each RAPID area, co-ordination of the programme across the Department and ongoing consultation with senior management in the local authorities concerned. In addition, public agencies, including local authorities, are already providing a wide range of services in all RAPID areas. My Department provides funding to local authorities for many of these services.

Projects received from the local area implementation teams relate mainly to social housing, local road improvement measures and environmental issues which are delivered on the ground by local authorities. The nature and scale of many of these projects has necessitated extensive evaluation as well as consultation with local authorities and the Area Development Management Limited, ADM, RAPID support team. This evaluation and consultation process is ongoing with a view to progressing projects in so far as possible, in the context of available resources. Approval in principle has been given to the funding of some projects which are in a position to proceed and details, as available, are set out in the following table.
