Vol. 566 No. 2

Written Answers. - Electricity Generation.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

133 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources the expected percentage of the State's energy generation that will come from renewable sources by 2005. [12516/03]

The alternative energy requirement programme, AER, operated by my Department aims to add a minimum 500 megawatts of renewable energy sourced electricity generating capacity to the electricity network by 2005.

The most recent AER round, AER VI, closed for the receipt of tenders on the 24 April last. A full assessment of all bids is ongoing. However, I am satisfied the level of interest expressed in AER VI, combined with projects proceeding under the previous AER V round, will ensure the 500 mw target is delivered. This new capacity will increase the overall contribution from renewable sources to approximately 12% of total electricity consumption by 2005.
