Vol. 566 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Closures.

John Cregan

Question:

118 Mr. Cregan asked the Minister for Education and Science the position regarding the proposed closure of a primary school (details supplied); the alternative location being made for the pupils; if his Department is taking a proactive approach on this matter; if the school authorities are free to close the school and dispose of the property; and the provision being made for other facilities in the school, including the pre-school group. [12452/03]

The school authorities recently advised my Department that, due to declining enrolments, they have been examining various options for the future of the school. One of the options being considered at present is the possibility of amalgamation with another local school with effect from September 2004. The planning section of my Department is in consultation with the school authorities and the local schools' inspectors in the matter and no final decisions have been made.
