Vol. 566 No. 4

Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 31 dealing with a number of different topics. I propose to deal with these topics separately and I will call on Deputies in the order in which they submitted their notices to my office.

In regard to the first topic I have received notice from Deputy Deenihan and call on him to state the matter.

I wish to seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to raise a matter of national importance, namely, the dispute involving members of the CPSU and the Department of Agriculture and Food, which is severely disrupting services to the farming community in counties Kerry, Mayo, Galway and Limerick, involving the lodging of suckler cow applications; the processing of REP scheme payments; the issuing of cards to herds that were locked up but are now cleared for movement; the issuing of permits to farmers to move cattle from locked-up herds and several other services; and the need for the Minister for Agriculture and Food to get involved immediately to resolve the dispute.

I call Deputy Gogarty to state his matter.

I wish to seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to raise a matter of national importance, namely, the need for the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform to officially clarify whether he misled the House in his reply to concerns I expressed during an Adjournment debate on 30 January regarding the proposed juvenile detention centre at Newlands Cross in Clondalkin, when he said that no decision had been made about the facility; and to clarify that the Tánaiste had no extra influence in stopping this centre, contrary to a leaflet she sent around to constituents the next day. One of the people involved is not telling the whole truth.

Surely the Progressive Democrats would never do something like that.

I call on Deputy Cuffe to state his matter.

I wish to seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to raise an important matter of public interest requiring urgent consideration, namely, the provision of places for juvenile offenders. Given that the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform has cancelled plans to build a detention centre for young offenders at Newlands Cross and has closed down Shanganagh Castle in Shankill, are there any Government proposals to provide appropriate places for the detention and rehabilitation of young offenders?

Having considered the matters raised, they are not in order under Standing Order 31.
