Vol. 566 No. 5

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Security.

Seán Ryan

Question:

21 Mr. S. Ryan asked the Minister for Defence the investigation which has been held into the circumstances in which a suspected pipe bomb was found inside the perimeter of Gormanstown Army camp; if a review of security has been undertaken at the camp in view of this incident; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13076/03]

On 15 April 2003, an improvised explosive device (IED), a pipebomb measuring 15cm long and 5cm in diameter, was observed on a grassy area inside the perimeter of Gormanston Camp by a member of the Defence Forces based in the camp. The IED was disarmed by a Defence Forces explosives ordnance disposal (EOD) team. Sections of the IED were taken away for forensic examination by the Garda. The remainder was destroyed in situ by controlled explosion by the EOD team.

I am advised by the military authorities that separate investigations into the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the IED are currently being conducted by the Military Police and the Garda.

Security in all military posts is reviewed by the Defence Forces on an ongoing basis.
