Vol. 566 No. 5

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Equipment.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

46 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Defence the extent to which equipment to counter a terrorist attack has been provided to the Army, Naval Service and Air Corps; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13307/03]

The Defence Forces have put in place training and equipment procurement programmes to deal with terrorist attacks using chemical, biological, nuclear and radiological substances. The procurement programme caters for individual and collective protection and a range of the most up to date detection and decontamination equipment. Training courses have also been conducted at home and abroad to keep abreast with the latest developments in this field.

The Defence Forces have specialist units, such as the army ranger wing, bomb disposal units and specialist search teams which are equipped to meet these specific threats.
