Vol. 567 No. 5

Written Answers. - Offshore Islands.

John Perry

Question:

153 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs his plans regarding statutory elected bodies on off-shore islands; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14492/03]

The Deputy may be aware that included in the current programme for Government is a commitment to establish an islands council, thus recognising the islands as a region in the context of the local government system.

Following my appointment as Minister with responsibility for the islands last year, I held a meeting with Comhdháil Oileáin na hÉireann – the Irish Islands Federation – at which this issue was discussed. It was agreed at that meeting that An Chomhdháil would examine this issue in greater detail in order to fully establish its requirements in this regard. On receipt of An Chomhdháil's response, it is my intention to pursue this issue with my colleague, the Minister for the Environment and Local Government.
