Vol. 568 No. 1

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Enda Kenny

Question:

388 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Education and Science the position regarding a school (details supplied) in County Cork; if his attention has been drawn to the substandard conditions in which the school operates; if the pupils are to receive a new school; when he expects the new school building to be built; the amount of funding expected to be allocated to the school; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15887/03]

The school referred to by the Deputy is listed in section 4, primary, of the 2003 school building programme.

Section 4 of the programme sets out the large scale primary school projects that are intended to be authorised to proceed to construction in 2003. The school authorities will be kept advised of developments.

Pat Breen

Question:

389 Mr. P. Breen asked the Minister for Education and Science if his Department will honour its commitment given in January 2001 and again in February 2002 to provide a new primary school in Clarecastle, County Clare, to cater for the future growth in the area and also to elevate the current problems the school has with pre-fabricated buildings, crowded classrooms and unacceptable sanitary conditions; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15889/03]

The proposed large-scale building project for Clarecastle national school is listed in section 7 of the 2003 school building programme which I published on my Department's website at www.education.ie. This proposed project is at an early stage of architectural planning and has been assigned a "band 2" by my Department in accordance with the published criteria for prioritising large-scale projects.

Projects listed in sections 6 and 7 – primary – are not being authorised to progress beyond their current stage of architectural planning for the time being. The timing of when projects listed in these sections can progress to tender and construction will depend on the budgetary allocation for 2004 and subsequent years and the priority afforded to each project by reference to the band rating. In the meantime, individual schools should use their devolved grant to deal with any urgent health and safety works.

The Deputy will appreciate that, due to commercial sensitivities of site acquisition, I am unable to comment on the potential purchase of specific sites.
