Dan Neville

Question:

560 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will report on the removal of brains for research purposes without consent at the Beaumont, St. Vincent's and St. James' hospitals, Dublin, and at University Hospital Galway and Cork University Hospital. [15573/03]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 559 and 560 together.

The Deputy will be aware that the Post Mortem Inquiry, chaired by Ms Anne Dunne SC is investigating post mortem examination policy, practice and procedure in all hospitals in the State since 1970. Any questions in relation to the removal and retention of brains will fall to be addressed as part of the inquiry. It is my intention to lay the report before the Houses when I have considered the inquiry's findings and recommendations.
