Vol. 568 No. 1

Written Answers. - Registration of Title.

Michael Ring

Question:

667 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of registration arrears cases pending in the Land Registry Office; and the length of time it is taking in dealings to be registered, in particular, for registration of sub-divisions in the five western counties, on a county basis. [15459/03]

The information sought by the Deputy is as follows. The total number of dealings pending at present in the Land Registry office is approximately 160,000. This number changes constantly as applications are lodged and completed. The number of dealings completed during 2003 to date is 70,127 or an average of 3,405 applications per week.

The average length of time taken to complete dealings is 47 weeks. This average figure incorporates all applications ranging from those that are completed within ten days of lodgement to those that are on hands for several years or are the subject of ongoing correspondence. The average time is calculated by dividing the total number of applications pending by the average daily output. The time taken to process individual applications varies and is affected by a wide variety of factors. For example, almost 40% of all applications lodged are the subject of further correspondence with the lodging parties, thereby adding considerably to the time taken to process them. At present, more than 34,000 of the total number of applications on hands are under query leaving a "live" arrear of 126,000.

The average time taken to complete subdivision applications lodged in relation to the five western counties at present is 115 weeks. The average time is calculated by dividing the total number of applications pending by the average daily output. The following is the approximate position for each of these counties with regard to the length of time for the completion of sub-division applications:

Galway

118 weeks

Mayo

135 weeks

Sligo

135 weeks

Roscommon

81 weeks

Leitrim

104 weeks
