Written Answers. - Closed Circuit Television Systems.

Mary Upton

Question:

677 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform further to Parliamentary Question No. 226 of 26 February 2003, the details of all the expressions of interest his Department has received for the community based closed circuit television scheme; and when organisations will be able to submit applications. [15635/03]

My Department has received in excess of 150 expressions of interest in the community based CCTV scheme which was launched to facilitate community based groups who wish to install their own local CCTV system. Expressions of interests have been received from chambers of commerce, local authorities, urban district councils, town councils, community councils, community partnerships, residential associations, district development companies and private individuals. A code of practice, drawn up in co-operation with the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner, and detailed technical specifications, drawn up by the Garda Síochána, are almost complete. When both the code of practice and the technical specifications have been finalised, my Department will issue copies of same to all communities who expressed an interest in the community based CCTV scheme and any applications subsequently received will be evaluated and processed.
