Vol. 568 No. 2

Written Answers. - Education Expenditure.

David Stanton

Question:

156 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Education and Science the expenditure on pre-primary education as a percentage of GDP in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16112/03]

Expenditure on pre-primary education programmes by the Department of Education and Science in 2002 represented approximately 0.005% of GDP. These are specific programmes targeting disadvantaged pupils in the three to four year age category. Children in Ireland are not required by law to attend school until they have reached their sixth birthday. Virtually all five year olds and more than half of four year olds currently attend primary schools. Therefore, much of what is considered pre-schooling in other countries is already incorporated in the primary school system here. The details for the remaining years are being compiled at present and I will arrange to pass these to the Deputy in due course.
