Vol. 568 No. 2

Written Answers. - Marine Accidents.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

124 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources the progress which has been made with regard to the proposed recovery from the owners of the cost of the removal of oil from the Panamanian registered tanker, the Princess Eva; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15929/03]

I refer the House to my reply on 15 April 2003 where I indicated that discussions were under way with the owners of the vessel, Princess Eva, to recover the costs of the services of the Irish Coast Guard in relation to the incident. The position now is that the Department has formally requested the owners to pay €214,500 in full settlement of the costs involved. A full breakdown of the costs has been supplied to the company. The Deputy might note that the owners met the operational costs associated with the removal of the oil from the Princess Eva to allow repairs to be undertaken in Donegal Bay, at the time of the incident.
