Vol. 568 No. 6

Written Answers. - Road Safety.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

276 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Transport if he has taken initiatives to eliminate the various accident blackspots at which hundreds of lives have been lost throughout the country over the years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17177/03]

Measures to deal with accident blackspots on the national road network are a matter for the National Roads Authority, NRA, and local authorities concerned. As the Deputy will be aware, my Department provides an annual block grant to the NRA, which is responsible for allocating funding to local authorities in respect of projects on national roads.

The scheduling of any necessary remedial works at accident blackspot locations is a matter for the NRA, together with relevant local authorities, in the context of available resources under the NRA's remedial measures programme. As the Deputy is aware from my response to Question No 210 of 28 May 2003, I have asked the NRA to forward further details of this programme to him.
