Vol. 569 No. 3

Written Answers. - Human Rights Abuses.

Aengus Ó Snodaigh

Question:

209 Aengus Ó Snodaigh asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will raise concerns over the recent reports of torture of Iraqi POWs by British forces and deaths in their custody with the British Prime Minister; and if he will raise concerns over reports of torture of Iraqi POWs by US forces with the US President. [17641/03]

The Government has been consistent in making clear to all parties its concerns regarding obligations under international humanitarian law. That will continue to be the Government's policy. The occupying powers have fully accepted their obligations and responsibilities under international law, most notably in their support for UN Security Council Resolution 1483. I am aware of reports that certain allegations of mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners are being investigated.

Question No. 210 answered with Question No. 206.
