Vol. 569 No. 3

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Mary Upton

Question:

235 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will sanction additional resource hours for a person (details supplied) in Dublin 6W. [17396/03]

I have asked my officials to investigate this matter and issue a response to the school authority.

Mary Wallace

Question:

236 Ms M. Wallace asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has received correspondence from a post-primary school (details supplied) in County Kildare regarding two persons (details supplied) with special needs who are due to commence in the school in September 2003 who at the very least should be provided with a continuum of services in terms of their existing provision of hours for both resource and assistants; if the position will be reviewed in his Department in order to ensure that these persons do not lose this education opportunity; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17397/03]

I am aware of the issues to which the Deputy refers. Arising from concerns expressed by the parents of the students in question, I arranged for a review of the special support services required by both students at second level.

I am pleased to inform the Deputy that arising from this review, it has been decided to increase the special support services provided to the school in question to cater for both students to 30 hours per week special needs assistant support and ten hours per week resource teacher support.

I am confident that this increased allocation will enable both students to derive maximum benefit from their participation at second level.
