Vol. 569 No. 3

Written Answers. - UN Treaties.

David Stanton

Question:

386 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the situation regarding Ireland's position on the proposed United Nations treaty on human rights of people with disabilities; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17679/03]

As I indicated in response to previous parliamentary questions on this matter and I responded directly to the Deputy on this question as recently as last Thursday during the session of the Oireachtas Joint Sub-Committee on Human Rights, Ireland believes the guiding principle of any new legal instrument in the area of disability should be to ensure that persons with disabilities can better enjoy their human rights. Ireland, along with our EU partners, aim to ensure that the processes and outcomes of the ad hoc committee meet this principle.
