Vol. 569 No. 3

Written Answers. - Hospital Staffing.

Eamon Ryan

Question:

143 Mr. Eamon Ryan asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of Filipino staff currently in public and private hospitals here; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17624/03]

My Department does not record information on the nationality of staff working in either the public or private hospitals as a matter of course. However, I have made inquiries with An Bord Altranais, which is the body responsible for registering nurses, including those from abroad. Figures supplied by An Bord Altranais indicate that, as of 20 June 2003, the total number of overseas nurses registered is 7,987. Of this figure, 3,403 nurses are from the Philippines. The other main nationalities represented are:–

Britain

2,215

Australia

493

United States

304

India

293

South Africa

213

There is no breakdown available as between public and private hospital employment.
