Vol. 569 No. 5

Written Answers. - Industrial Development.

Denis Naughten

Question:

70 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the discussions he has had with a company (details supplied) to secure the rebuilding of its Roosky plant in County Roscommon; the action he intends to take to secure the re-opening of the facility; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18142/03]

As the Deputy will be aware, the company yesterday announced its future plans both for its Roosky facility and for the wider pigmeat processing operations in the group. The company has decided not to proceed with the rebuilding of the Roosky processing plant which was destroyed in a major fire last year but will instead restore the capacity lost by upgrading and expanding its other two pig processing plants. The company remains committed to the continued operation of its cannery facility in Roosky which employs 95 staff. The decisions taken on the future configuration of its operations are entirely a commercial matter for the company itself.
