222 Ms Burton asked the Minister for Finance if he has formally made representations on behalf of the Government to the proposal by the Commission for VAT on postage; if the Government have made representations to the consultative process on this issue; if his attention has been drawn to the cost implications for charities which fundraise through direct mail; and if he intends to raise the matter at the next ECOFIN meeting. This proposal will receive its first examination at Council level at the working party on tax questions on 2 July 2003. As usual, it will come to ECOFIN in due course when this examination has been made. It will not arise at the next ECOFIN meeting. I am aware of the views of relevant players in the industry and the concerns of the charitable sector. I will be inputting our views into the examination process, and at ECOFIN, as appropriate when the issue comes before it.
