Vol. 570 No. 3

Written Answers. - Schools Refurbishment.

Jack Wall

Question:

179 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason his Department will not provide furniture for a school, the costing of which is ?70,000, in view of the fact that the VAT can be recouped and that the provision of such furniture will complete the entire project, thus eliminating this school from his Department's list; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19007/03]

I am not aware of which school the Deputy is referring to in his question. However, the general position is that, based on the budgetary allocation for 2003, an amount of €1.2 million was set aside for the provision of furniture in all primary schools throughout the country. In view of the level of demands on the allocation for furniture, it is not possible to provide grant aid towards the replacement of existing furniture in schools. Schools may also use funds allocated by my Department under the terms of the grant scheme for minor works to assist in the provision of furniture, provided such funds are not required for more urgent and immediate works.

Question:

180 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Education and Science when his Department will provide funding to a school (details supplied) in County Kildare to ensure proper facilities for the pupils and teachers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19008/03]

My Department is currently funding a largescale refurbishment and extension project at Naomh Mhuire, Ballymore Eustace. This is one of 63 such largescale projects in primary schools throughout the country that are under construction and are listed in section 3 – primary – of the 2003 school building programme. Based on the budgetary allocation for 2003, an amount of €1.2 million was set aside for the provision of furniture in primary schools throughout the country. In view of the level of demands on the furniture allocation, it is not possible to provide grant aid for the replacement of existing furniture at the school. My Department has offered some grant aid towards the provision of some additional furniture at the school. The school may also use funds allocated by my Department under the terms of the grant scheme for minor works to assist in the provision of furniture, provided such funds are not required for more urgent and immediate works.
