Question:

205 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Finance the way in which the Government has responded to proposals from the European Commission to adjust value added tax rules that could see the removal of the zero rating for children's clothing and shoes. [20946/03]

The Government is strongly opposed to any change in the current VAT arrangements which allow for the zero rating of children's clothes and shoes. This view has been expressed at the relevant Council working party meetings of officials and at meetings of Finance Ministers at ECOFIN.
