Vol. 571 No. 2

Written Answers. - Youth Services.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

321 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs the position regarding the young people's facilities and services fund; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21351/03]

As the Deputy is aware, the young peoples facilities and services fund, YPFSF, was established in 1998 to assist in the development of facilities – including sport and recreational facilities – and services in disadvantaged areas where a significant drug problem exists or has the potential to develop.

Overall responsibility for managing the fund transferred to my Department in January 2003 from the Department of Education and Science. I envisage that the fund will continue to operate, as heretofore, with its main focus on the 14 local drugs task force areas. To date, over €68 million has been allocated under the fund.

The Cabinet Committee on Social Inclusion has considered a number of issues in relation to the operation of the fund, including its future funding. The matter will be kept under review and the Cabinet committee will be returning to the issue again at its next meeting.
