Vol. 572 No. 3

Written Answers. - Child Abuse.

John McGuinness

Question:

271 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science the amount of Government funding granted to the organisation Right of Place; the list of projects covered by this funding; and if the organisation will be guaranteed future funding. [22891/03]

My Department continues to be engaged in a wide-ranging programme designed to provide redress for the abuse of children in institutions. This programme was instigated in May 1999 with the Taoiseach's apology to all victims of abuse on behalf of Irish society.

The provision of funding by my Department to survivor support groups and outreach support services is to meet the costs of providing a comprehensive information and referral service to victims of abuse in Ireland and the United Kingdom. The services provided include information on the Government strategy for addressing past abuse and referral to counselling, education and other health services. Funding is currently provided for a number of support groups, including Right of Place. A total of €149,423.34 was provided for Right of Place in 2002 and funding of €110,000.00 has been approved in 2003.
