Vol. 572 No. 3

Written Answers. - Rail Accidents.

Pat Breen

Question:

418 Mr. P. Breen asked the Minister for Transport if Iarnród Éireann will initiate new safety railway checks on all bridge crossings and railway crossings on roads on Iarnród Éireann's network as a result of the recent railway accident at Cahir, County Tipperary; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23166/03]

I have been informed by Iarnród Éireann that it is examining all bridges on its network of similar construction to the Suir River viaduct, at Cahir, County Tipperary. This examination is, I understand, being done purely as a precautionary measure as the cause of the derailment is not known at this time.

All other safety critical infrastructure, including bridges and level crossings, are routinely inspected by Iarnród Éireann personnel.
