Vol. 572 No. 3

Written Answers. - Road Traffic Offences.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

455 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of drivers who have been penalised for driving through a red light in the past five years; and the number of accidents which have been caused by driving through a red light in the past five years according to Garda records. [22960/03]

I have set out below the number of cases in which the Garda has initiated proceedings against motorists in respect of traffic light offences and the number of successful prosecutions for these offences for each of the years 1997 to 2001. Figures for 2002 are not available at this time, but will be included in the Garda annual report for 2002 when published. On-the-spot fines are also imposed on motorists who commit traffic light offences. However, I am informed by the Garda authorities that the statistics in respect of "fines on the spot" for traffic light offences are not readily available and that the compilation of these statistics would require a disproportionate amount of Garda time and resources which could not be justified. The Garda authorities have further advised me that statistics are not compiled in such a way as to indicate the number of collisions that may have resulted from breaches of traffic light regulations.
