Vol. 572 No. 3

Written Answers. - Road Safety.

Seán Ryan

Question:

93 Mr. S. Ryan asked the Minister for Transport if it is intended to introduce random testing of drivers for alcohol levels; if it is intended to reduce the permitted blood-alcohol level; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23127/03]

The Government is committed to the development of a new road safety strategy that will apply for the next three years. The new strategy, which is being prepared by the high level group on road safety, will in particular address as a priority the best approach to future policy on drink driving, including whether random breath testing should be deployed and whether the current blood-alcohol level should be reviewed. I propose to bring specific proposals relating to the new strategy to Government to facilitate its publication before the end of the year.
