Vol. 572 No. 5

Adjournment Debate. - Legislative Programme.

John Gormley

Question:

136 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Health and Children if a decision has been reached with regard to the right to use the title, physical therapist, in relation to the Health and Social Care Professionals Bill; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23734/03]

The issue of protection of common title, including that of "physical therapist", has a number of important legal, public interest and competition aspects which continue to be the subject of review by my Department in the course of the drafting of the Health and Social Care Professionals Bill. My Department has commissioned an independent study from the Institute of Public Administration to assist in elucidating various issues raised in the many representations made to me concerning the case for and against protection of the title "physical therapist". The IPA has already consulted the appropriate representative bodies which have expressed an interest in this matter.
