Vol. 574 No. 1

Written Answers. - Hospitals Building Programme.

Paul Kehoe

Question:

399 Mr. Kehoe asked the Minister for Health and Children when he last visited St. John's Hospital, Enniscorthy; if his attention was drawn, when visiting, to the fact that a new building was promised; the commitment in this regard he gave on his visit; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26531/03]

As the Deputy will be aware, I visited St. John's Hospital on 3 July 2000. At that time, the South Eastern Health Board had included a two-phased plan for replacement of the hospital in its capital programme for funding under the National Development Plan 2000-2006 and I stated that I would have my officials examine the board's plans. I have since given the approval to the South Eastern Health Board to publish an advertisement in the Official Journal of the European Community to invite tenders for contracts for this project and discussions are ongoing between officials of my Department and board in relation to the stage 5 tender and contract documentation.

Question:

406 Mr. Kehoe asked the Minister for Health and Children when the design team and his Department will give the go ahead for the tender stage for the new proposed building of St. John's Hospital, Enniscorthy; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26538/03]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 400 to 406, inclusive, together.

My Department has architectural, quantity surveying, mechanical, electrical, structural and civil engineering advisers as well as representatives from services for older persons on the project team for St. John's Hospital, Enniscorthy, and the South Eastern Health Board is the client for this project.

I understand that project team meeting dates are normally arranged a month in advance and, as there had not been as much progress as envisaged prior to the arranged date, my Department's representation at the meeting was not warranted.
I wish to further advise the Deputy that St. John's Hospital project was advertised in the Official Journal of the European Communities under the restricted tendering procedure seeking expressions of interest for inclusion on the short list of tenderers. The South Eastern Health Board together with its design team is in the process of drawing up the restricted tender list to allow tenders to be invited. Approval will not be issued by my Department to proceed to the tender stage for the new proposed building of St. John's Hospital, Enniscorthy, until the selection process for the restricted tender list is complete.
