Vol. 574 No. 3

Written Answers. - Environmental Policy.

Ciarán Cuffe

Question:

250 Mr. Cuffe asked the Minister for the Environment Heritage and Local Government the total expenditure on the current race against waste advertisement campaign. [26915/03]

The total budget allocated by my Department for the race against waste campaign to June 2004 is €3.5 million. The campaign is comprised of two separate but related elements:

A waste awareness media campaign

This is a strong, creative, high quality multi-media campaign, designed to raise awareness of the need to address waste and to get people at home and at work to prevent, reduce, re-use, and recycle or compost their waste, and ultimately to reduce quantities for final disposal.

A waste communications strategy

This strategy will address general issues, public concerns, information needs, misunderstandings-misconceptions in regard to waste management and the measures required to deal with waste in an integrated way. The communications strategy will complement the extensive investment under way and planned in waste infrastructure.

The breakdown of expenditure over the two elements of the campaign is as follows:

Euro Expenditure

Media Campaign

2,612,385.08

Communications Strategy

887,614.92

Total

3,500,000.00

Question:

251 Mr. Cuffe asked the Minister for the Environment Heritage and Local Government the total expenditure by Government on waste reduction, re-use and recycling in the most recent year for which figures are available. [26916/03]

Information on the expenditure incurred by Government whether by individual Government Departments, local authorities or State agencies on their waste reduction, re-use and recycling costs is not available in my Department. However, 2003 allocations from the environment fund provide for approximately €40 million to be spent on supporting and promoting such initiatives including capital waste infrastructure grants, operational costs of recycling infrastructure, environment awareness and the national waste prevention programme. Allocations for 2004 have yet to be finalised but will include commitments made in respect of allocations carried over from 2003.
