Vol. 575 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Paul Kehoe

Question:

165 Mr. Kehoe asked the Minister for Education and Science the status of the appeal made to the School Transport Appeals Board for a person (details supplied) in County Wexford; the way in which this person is expected to get to school while this matter is pending; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28046/03]

A medical grant towards the cost of private transport arrangements was offered to the family referred to by the Deputy. The payment of grants towards private transport arrangements is deemed the most efficient and cost effective method of enabling children to avail of an education where normal transport services cannot meet their needs. An appeal has been received from the family regarding the rate of grant aid offered. This will be considered at the next meeting of the School Transport Appeals Board.

The medical grant offered to the family will be paid at the end of each month on receipt of a statement from the school authorities setting out the number of days on which the pupil attended and the number of days on which the school was

open. The family may use this grant to assist with the cost of private transport arrangements while the appeal is pending.
