Vol. 575 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Recruitment.

Pat Carey

Question:

279 Mr. Carey asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if candidates wishing to join the Garda Síochána, who have type 1 diabetes, are refused entry; if the condition develops while in service a garda is not promoted to a higher rank; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28079/03]

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that entrance to the Garda Síochána is governed by the Garda Síochána (Admission and Appointments) Regulations 1988, as amended. Candidates who apply to join the force and who have type 1 diabetes mellitus are not found medically fit for entry. Promotion in the force is governed by the Garda Síochána (Promotion) Regulations 1987 to 2001. Candidates who meet the criteria outlined in these regulations are eligible for promotion.
