Vol. 575 No. 3

Written Answers. - National Parks.

Paul McGrath

Question:

324 Mr. P. McGrath asked the Minister for the Environment Heritage and Local Government the reason the Castleknock gate to the Phoenix Park, Dublin 15, has been left in a state of disrepair for several months; the timeframe for the long-promised improvements to Chesterfield Avenue; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28317/03]

The Castleknock gate has been damaged on numerous occasions in the past and repairs have always been carried out promptly. However, following on the most recent incidents involving commercial vehicles on two separate occasions over the autumn period, it has been decided that more robust measures are needed to protect the gate, which is a protected structure under the Planning Acts. Plans are being drawn up to insert a steel core in each of the gate pillars to reduce future damage. It is proposed to proceed with this work early in the new year.

A planning application will be made shortly to Dublin City Council in relation to an integrated scheme for the renovation of Chesterfield Avenue, including the provision of traffic calming measures and a roundabout at Mountjoy Cross. Pending this, it is planned shortly to carry out resurfacing works between Parkgate Street and the Gough roundabout.
