Vol. 576 No. 5

Written Answers. - Compulsory Retirement Age.

Fergus O'Dowd

Question:

217 Mr. O'Dowd asked the Minister for Finance the reason the compulsory retirement age of 65 will not be removed from existing public sector employees, in particular to those who do not have full pension entitlements. [30042/03]

The changes in pension and retirement ages which I announced in my budget statement to the House on 3 December 2003, form a package of conditions which will apply to new entrants to the public service. As no changes are being made to the pension ages of serving staff, the issue of the removal of the compulsory retirement age for serving public servants did not arise.
