Written Answers. - Northern Ireland Issues.

Brendan Smith

Question:

93 Mr. B. Smith asked the Taoiseach if he will report on the discussions he has had with leaders of political parties represented in the Northern Ireland Assembly following the recent election; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [30515/03]

I held a series of meetings on Thursday last with delegations from Sinn Féin, led by Gerry Adams, the SDLP, led by Mark Durkan and with Ambassador Richard Haass who had also visited Belfast and met with the parties.

Secretary of State Paul Murphy met the DUP last Monday week. After the meeting, they publicly stated their intention to be constructive. They also conveyed that message to Ambassador Haass. We would welcome their positive engagement, though they have not yet communicated their intention to meet with us.

Question:

94 Mr. B. Smith asked the Taoiseach the proposals he has to meet with Prime Minister Blair in relation to the need to progress the implementation of the Good Friday Agreement; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [30528/03]

I met Prime Minister Blair in Cardiff on Friday 28 November 2003. We remain very determined and committed to consolidating the peace and keeping Northern Ireland moving forward. We made this clear in our joint statement afterwards.

I will meet the Prime Minister again in the period before Christmas and will then review with him the prospects for progress in the light of our respective contacts with the parties.
