Vol. 576 No. 6

Written Answers. - Departmental Structures.

Dan Boyle

Question:

35 Mr. Boyle asked the Minister for Finance the plans he has to introduce an actuarial unit within his Department, or to establish a stand alone body that would assist various Government Departments in actuarial work. [30068/03]

The Department has a pension section specialising in the development of pension policy and the provision of advice to all other Departments in relation to pension matters. This is staffed by two principal officers, one who is an actuary, six assistant principals, two higher executive officers, two executive officers and three clerical officers. This unit is additional to the Pay Master General's Office, pensions, which issues pension payments to retired civil servants. Accordingly, in view of the considerable support that is currently provided to Departments in this regard and to the Government's policy on the reduction of numbers in the public service, I do not consider it appropriate or necessary to establish a stand alone actuarial unit at the present time.
