Vol. 577 No. 1

Written Answers. - Deaths in State Custody.

Martin Ferris

Question:

187 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his Department will provide a list of all those who were executed, or otherwise died, in State custody between 1 June 1922 and 31 December 1924, detailing their names, addresses and dates of birth; the procedure under which sentence of death was passed; the location of their deaths; the locations of execution; if an inquest was held in each case; the results of any inquests; if internal inquiries were held in respect of any of the deaths; and if any State servant was disciplined as a consequence of such an inquiry. [30550/03]

The precise information requested by the Deputy is not readily available and would require a disproportionate and inordinate amount of staff time and effort to prepare, which could not be justified in circumstances where there are other significant demands on resources.

However, excluding executions which were carried out during the Civil War, according to prison records available, there were six executions from the foundation of the State to 31 December 1924. The names of these individuals and the dates of executions are set out in the table.
