Written Answers. - Prisoner Statistics.

Finian McGrath

Question:

179 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of people in Irish prisons and the number serving drugs related sentences. [31847/03]

The Director General of the Prison Service has informed me that, on 17 December, there were 3,151 persons in custody. As many as 503 prisoners are serving sentences for specific drug offences, such as possession for the purpose of sale or supply, unlawful importation of a controlled drug or the unlawful production of a controlled drug.
