Vol. 577 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Recruitment.

Finian McGrath

Question:

178 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the projected number of gardaí to be recruited in 2004. [31846/03]

The Garda authorities are responsible for the detailed allocation of resources. They have informed me that the personnel strength of the Garda Síochána, including all ranks, at 16 December is 12,024.

As Minister it is my policy and the Government's policy to prioritise Garda recruitment and training in order to bring the strength of the force up to its maximum authorised strength of 12,200 as soon as possible. This would make maximum use of the existing capacity of the Garda Training College, Templemore. This year 690 trainees were admitted into the Garda college and a new recruitment competition is under way.

The commissioner has projected, based on the anticipated rate of retirement of 342 for 2004, that the maximum authorised force strength of 12,200 will be achieved during 2004. The number of trainees admitted into the Garda college in 2004 will maintain the strength of the force at 12,200 into the future.
